Qualifications

There are various qualifications one can pursue to obtain insurance knowledge, skill and applied competence.

Loss Adjusters generally either come from an insurance background, or a technical skill background such as engineering, construction, property or other technical skill.

Insurance qualifications recommended include:

Board exams

Whilst there are qualifications that provide insurance knowledge and skill there are few that cover the skill and applied competence of insurance claims investigations and the skill of loss adjusting. For this purpose, the ILA has published content on the Principles and Practice of Loss Adjusting and Report Writing to enhance the skill of claims investigations, claims processes and providing insurers with reports based on their claims investigations and recommendations on claims settlements.

It is for this reason that all ILA Professional Members are required to pass a Board examination at the required level of the Professional Designation as outlined in the Competence Framework.

There are regular opportunities to take the Board exams for those who think they are ready to challenge the exam. Alternatively, those who have operated as Loss Adjusters for an extended period as per the Competence Framework, the ILA offer a Recognition of Prior Learning process which requires the submission of a portfolio of evidence (POE) to confirm the required workplace experience. Once the POE has been signed off and marked the required pass mark will provide access to the Board examination for professional designation and elevation purposes.

CPD – Continuing Professional Development

The Insurance industry is particularly vast and Insurers offer policies in no less than 16 lines of business. Each line of business provides services to all types of businesses within their area of specialisation with many differing policies, complexities and conditions. Therefore, there are many innovations, variations and requires specialist investigation knowledge and skill. This also provides a host of opportunities for topics to update and provide CPD content.

CPD topics are generally divided into main categories such as:

  • technical content updates
  • insurance market trends
  • legislative, regulatory and case law updates
  • investigation techniques, criminal, court and evidence handling trends and updates; or
  • general business skills

CPD Providers are invited to register with the ILA Education Department for approval as providers and for programme approval.
