Mmakgomo Motalane

Mmakgomo Motalane is the Claims Manager at Sasria SOC Ltd. In August 2021, following the July unrests, Mmakgomo was appointed in her current role, taking accountability for overseeing the claims department, facilitating claims and solving complex escalations. She joined Sasria in 2011 as Senior Claims Controller, charged with the responsibility of streamlining and strengthening the organisation’s claims department.

Prior to joining Sasria, she was the Team Leader for Commercial Non-Motor Claims at the then Mutual & Federal (Old Mutual Insure). She was also the Claims Negotiator at Alexander Forbes Insurance Brokers, and later the Claims Team Leader at Zurich Insurance Company. With over 26 years of experience in the short-term insurance industry, Mmakgomo holds a BCom degree which she obtained at North-West University in 1996.

A lifelong learner, Mmakgomo also holds a Higher Certificate in Short-term Insurance from Milpark Education. She also completed the Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) and the Intermediate Certificate in Business Studies (ICiBS) from the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA).

Caroline Theodosiou

Caroline specialises in litigation and insurance law, representing clients in the local and international insurance markets (including Europe and Africa).  Her practice focuses on advising insurers, reinsurers, intermediaries and corporate clients on insurance related issues and providing strategic advice on the management and resolution of disputes.  She advises on all aspects of  insurance law and contractual and delictual disputes, including, policy interpretation,  coverage and  policy wording, the defence of claims and the institution of subrogated recovery actions.  She has considerable expertise in  financial lines claims including directors and officers liability, warranty and indemnity, professional indemnity and cyber insurance.  She also has experience  in construction and engineering, property, product and general liability as well as aviation and marine related claims.

Caroline has B.Com and LLB degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand and an LLM in Insurance Law from the University of South Africa.

Erwyn Durman

Erwyn is an insurance risk advisory and dispute resolution specialist. He has expertise in insurance law and regularly advises major players in the local and international insurance and reinsurance market.

He has managed disputes on behalf  of insurers, reinsurers, brokers and corporate clients on coverage issues and other insurance related issues arising from various insurance policies and insurance treaties.

He advises and handles disputes (actions and claims) dealing with issues of coverage, material non-disclosure and misrepresentation, warranties, and policy interpretation within the context of assets and liability insurance, all risks cover, professional indemnity insurance, product liability, financial lines, business interruption, construction and engineering, aviation, medical malpractice and personal injury.

Erwyn has BSc and LLB degrees from the University of Pretoria.

Alexis Barwise 

Alexis has an in-depth knowledge as an electrical design engineer, systems engineer, and lightning protection engineer across several different industry sectors globally. Alexis received his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (B.Eng.) in both Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the North-West University. He completed several of his master’s degree subjects in the field of power quality.

He currently serves as an active member on both national and international standards and technical committees, such as IEC TC81, SANS 10142-1, SANS 10142-1-2, SANS 10313. In 2019 he was elected, by the SABS, as the Chairman of the TC81 mirror committee. This is a fitting position as he has been serving as SA’s elected Technical Expert on the IEC TC81, a committee which oversees all the relevant international lightning protection standards. He is part of several of the maintenance teams of the IEC TC 81 group and is the elected convener of two of its task forces.

More recently Alexis founded Blitz-Detect (, which is the owner and operator of the most advanced lightning detection network in South Africa. He has written numerous technical articles and provided countless training courses in lightning and surge protection in several countries globally. Education is key, and is why he is one of the founders and principals of the Lightning Protection College (, which is a fully-fledged online training platform for the industry at large.

He serves as a board member on the Lightning 30 Foundation, focused on saving lives in South Africa. He is also a founding member and the vice-chair of the Lightning Protection Practitioners ( which is an association aimed at uplifting the lightning practitioners through training and skills development. Alexis also serves as the technical expert to ACLENet (, a group whose mission it is to reduce death, injury and property damage caused by lightning across Africa. Their main campaign is  “Save a life in Africa”.

Meggyn Marot

Meggyn has a business and legal degree, and 15 years experience in professional indemnity insurance. She joined Aon SA in 2006, and was the Senior Legal Risk Advisor for 6 years before moving into the insurance side of the business as a Principal Broker and then running the professions division for a further 7 years. In 2019 Meggyn moved across to underwriting when she joined iTOO Special Risks, a specialist underwriting management agency. Meggyn was the Product Head for Professional Indemnity, for 3 years before moving back into her true passion, Risk Management, and is now the Risk Manager for iTOO Special Risks.

Johan Van Den Heever

With over 36 years of experience in the area of disaster and firefighting and qualifications from numerous institutions including the University of Pretoria, Cranfield University and Oklahoma State University.

Johan is a highly skilled and has in depth knowledge in rescue, disaster management and forensic fire investigations.

Johan has successfully completed numerous in-service training courses and holds certifications in structural firefighting, vehicle rescue, swift water rescue, lift rescue, high angle rescue, advanced fire investigation (instructor), fire engine pump operations, multi-cultural training, specialised rescue diver, specialised deep diver, technical deep diver, advanced firefighting. He is also a qualified Intermediate Life Support Paramedic (ILS).

Johan has lectured on fire engineering, advanced fire prevention, fire investigation, advanced fire investigation, National Building Regulations, Fire By-laws, workplace firefighting. He has also been a guest speaker at various occasions, events, conferences and at universities.

He has published several articles in the fire protection industry and conducted numerous fire risk assessments in all sectors. Johan has also conducted numerous insurance risk surveys of commercial/domestic risks and conducted numerous forensic fire investigations locally, and internationally.
